The scope of service provided by professional accountants is influenced by legislation and case law as well as the dictates of a variety of government and private sector agencies: including State Boards of Accountancy, Academic Accreditation Bodies, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, independent standard setting bodies such as the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (US), the Financial Accounting Standards Board (US), the International Accounting Standards Board and self-regulatory organizations such as State Societies of CPA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. There are equivalent and emerging local international bodies that exist in most developed countries. It is important for academics, students, practitioners, regulators and researchers to consider, study and understand the role and relationship of such bodies with the practice and content of our discipline.
Research in Accounting Regulation is a refereed annual serial that seeks to publish high quality manuscripts, which address regulatory issues and policy affecting the practice of accountancy, broadly defined. Topics of interest include research based on:
1) Self-regulatory activities. 2) Case law and litigation. 3) Governmental and quasi-governmental regulation. 4) The economics of regulation, including modelling.
This research series aims to encourage the submission of original empirical, behavioural or applied research manuscripts that consider strategic and policy implications for regulation, regulatory models and markets. It is intended for individual researchers, practitioners, regulators and students of accountancy who desire to increase their understanding of the regulation of accountancy.

An Institutional and Normative Analysis of the World Trade Organization

An Institutional and Normative Analysis of the World Trade Organization (Legal Aspects of International Organization, 46) (Legal Aspects of International Organizations)
Martinus Nijhoff (November 15, 2005) | ISBN: 9004149619 | 398 pages | PDF | 1 MB

This book establishes a framework for analysis of the institutional and normative character of the WTO by locating the organization in a broader theory of international institutional law and in determining the basis for the conferral and exercise of powers in relation to its executive, legislative and adjudicative functions. The WTO is also read as an international regime in order to go beyond its formal legal and constitutional bases and to observe the Members’ practice in the context of the former semi-institutionalised GATT treaty regime with which it retains strong links. WTO decision-making, which underpins and informs its institutional and normative acts, is analysed in order to better understand the dynamics of the organization. Normative developments in the WTO are reviewed from the perspective of the creation, maintenance and revision of legally binding and non-binding or ‘soft’ law norms, in the sense of principles, rules and standards contained in primary treaty rules, which set out the rights and obligations of the Members, and subsidiary rule-making activity by WTO bodies.

International Finance: Third Edition

Keith Pilbeam, "International Finance" 3 Ed.
Palgrave Macmillan | Date:16-02-2006 | ISBN: 1403948372 | Pages 512 | DjVU | 12,5 Mb

This is a good text for International Finance. Written from a British point of view, at first it was a bit more tricky to comprehend the forex problems and conversions, but in the end it made things a lot easier learning it from another perspective that is normally given in the wall street journal, etc. It has a nice section on the recent debt and Asian financial crisis.

Principles of Finance with Excel

Principles of Finance with Excel
Oxford University Press, USA; (December 20, 2005) | ISBN: 0195301501 | PDF | 12 Mb | 928 pages

Principles of Finance with Excel is the first finance text that comprehensively integrates Excel into the teaching and practice of finance. Finance is inherently a topic requiring lots of computation and in today's business world this computation is almost wholly done in Excel. Despite this, existing finance texts continue to rely heavily on hand calculators, and business school students often fins that when they leave the academic environment they have to relearn both finance and Excel. The Excel-based approach of Principles of Finance with Excel gives better tools to the instructor and the student and integrates the educational message with the most useful financial tool available. There are no financial calculator examples in Principles of Finance with Excel, just Excel. The resulting message is clear: The Practice of Finance goes hand-in-hand with Excel. As every Excel user knows, a spreadsheet is not just a "computational tool", a slightly more sophisticated twist on the calculator. Using a spreadsheet gives new and deeper insights into financial decision making. The ability to combine graphics with computation, the powerful functions incorporated into the spreadsheet, and the ease with which sensitivity analysis can be done-all these give potent insights into financial problems.

Asset Allocation, 4th Ed

Roger C. Gibson, “Asset Allocation, 4th Ed”
Mc Gra w-H ill | 2007-12-20 | ISBN: 0071478094 | 336 pages | PDF | 5,7

The definitive guidebook for successful long-term investing

The third edition of Roger C. Gibson's Asset Allocation: Balancing Financial Risk was released in 2000 on the heels of the biggest bull market in a century and amidst talk of a new economy. The bear market that followed was the worst since 1973-1974 and resulted in the destruction of roughly half of the stock market's value. Through it all, Roger Gibson's advice to investors remained the same.

Gibson once again offers techniques to design all-weather portfolios that improve long-term performance, while mitigating overall risks through widely varying market environments.

Grounded in the principles of modern portfolio theory, this fourth edition of his investing classic explains how and why asset allocation works. Gibson demonstrates how adding new asset classes to a portfolio improves its risk-adjusted returns and how strategic asset allocation uses, rather than fights, the forces of capital markets to achieve investment success.

Gibson also addresses the practical side of investing, advocating an approach based on a disciplined execution of the fundamentals--the most important things that investment professionals and lay investors need to focus on to achieve their financial goals. With more than two decades of experience managing clients' portfolios and expectations, he underscores the importance of identifying and working through the emotional and psychological traps that can impede investment success. In this new edition, Gibson offers his proven guidance on multiple-asset-class investing with updated exhibits and research. New topics include:
A review of the 2000-2002 stock bear market in the context of bull and bear markets over the last 100 years
An expanded discussion of the dangers of market timing
Non-traditional asset classes such as real estate securities, commodity-linked securities, and TIPS in a diversified portfolio
The challenges of “frame-of-reference” risk--the most significant danger confronting the multiple-asset-class investor
The role of Monte Carlo simulation in retirement planning.

The Statistical Mechanics of Financial Markets

The Statistical Mechanics of Financial Markets
by Johannes | Voit Springer | 2005 | ISBN: 3540262857 | Pages: 378 | PDF | Size: 12,4 MB

This highly praised introductory treatment describes the parallels between statistical physics and finance both those established in the 100-year long interaction between these disciplines, as well as new research results on financial markets.

The random-walk technique, well known in physics, is also the basic model in finance, upon which are built, for example, the Black-Scholes theory of option pricing and hedging, plus methods of portfolio optimization. Here the underlying assumptions are assessed critically. Using empirical financial data and analogies to physical models such as fluid flows, turbulence, or superdiffusion, the book develops a more accurate description of financial markets based on random walks. With this approach, novel methods for derivative pricing and risk management can be formulated. Computer simulations of interacting-agent models provide insight into the mechanisms underlying unconventional price dynamics. It is shown that stock exchange crashes can be modelled in ways analogous to phase transitions and earthquakes, and sometimes have even been predicted successfully.

This third edition of "The Statistical Mechanics of Financial Markets" especially stands apart from other treatments because it offers new chapters containing a practitioner's treatment of two important current topics in banking: the basic notions and tools of risk management and capital requirements for financial institutions, including an overview of the new Basel II capital framework which may well set the risk management standards in scores of countries for years to come.
